Methodology
Congressional scorecards at That's My Congress are generated from observations of roll call voting and bill cosponsorship behavior during the 113th Congress.
The Liberal Action Score for a member of Congress is calculated as the percentage of a slate of possible liberal actions that were actually taken by that member. The liberal standard for judging bills is defined according to these conditions:
- Respect for constitutional protections of American civil liberty
- Transparency and public access in government
- Equal treatment of people under law
- The respect and pursuit of empirical knowledge through support for science and education
- Protection of the Earth's environmental richness
- Strengthening of economic opportunity for all
- Pursuit of peaceful solutions and opposition to militarism in policy
The Conservative Action Score for a member of Congress is calculated as percentage of a slate of possible conservative actions that were actually taken by that member. The conservative standard for judging bills is defined according to these conditions:
- Disregard for constitutional protections of American civil liberty
- Secrecy and exclusion of citizens from government
- Support for discriminatory policy
- The symbolic denigration and practical undermining of science and education in America
- Active harm to the environment or passive allowance for environmental destruction
- Pursuit of further advantage for those in America who are already its richest
- Dismissal of peaceful alternatives and submission to the interests of the military-industrial complex
The Net Conservative Score for a member is calculated as the Liberal Action Score minus the Conservative Action Score, resulting in a number ranging from -100 (an absolute and total congressional conservative) to +100 (an absolute and total congressional liberal).
If you see no Senators listed within an ideological category, this is not a typographical error. Rather, it indicates that no Senators have met the standard described for that category.
