That's My Congress is a progressive project with the mission of helping to wrest the United States Congress out of the grip of America's right wing fringe. In order to further this mission, we're hoping to put an end to the majority control of the Republican Party over the House of Representatives and the United States Senate.
Readers can be forgiven for assuming that our fundamental goal is the creation of a new Congress under the control of the Democratic Party. This mistaken assumption could easily be made by those who make an automatic link between the Democratic Party and progressive politics. We wish that such a link could be consistently made. Unfortunately, it cannot.
Let's make things clear:We prefer the Democratic Party to the Republican Party because members of the Democratic Party are more likely than members of the Republican Party to support common sense progressive policies. However, we are not Democratic Party loyalists. We are not willing to support any Democratic politician seeking a seat in Congress just because that politician is a Democrat.
We are realists, and we are well aware that, as an institution, the Democratic Party has the sole purpose of gaining and preserving power for itself. In order to do so, the Democratic Party as a whole must distinguish itself from the Republican Party. However, particular Democratic politicians sometimes find that a strategy of collaboration with the Republican right wing furthers their personal ambitions.
Such right wing Democrats count on the ignorance of Democratic Party voters. They survive because most Democratic voters are not aware of their right wing voting records.
It takes a lot of time to do a thorough job researching a politician's congressional voting record. That's why we make use of the congressional scorecards produced over at the Irregular Bin website for the House of Representatives and the United States Senate. In looking at these scorecards, we've found that there are many Democrats in the House of Representatives and in the Senate that have a nasty habit of caving in to Republican Party demands and even cooperating to promote the Republicans' right wing agenda. Take a look at the scorecards. You'll find these politicians too.
We're putting these right wing Democrats in Congress on notice. We're paying attention, and we're working hard to bring the dirty voting records of right wing Democratic politicians to the attention of progressive voters. No longer can right wing Democrats count on the ignorance of voters to protect them. We're bringing the light of day to the congressional record, so those shady characters who wear Democratic masks while conducting the crooked business of the Republican Party won't have any more obscure, dark corners in which they can hide.
We believe in the progressive values of liberty, peace, justice, and equality under the law. We will fight the Republicans who oppose these traditional American values, but we will fight just as hard against Democrats who put these values in danger. Our warning to the right wing Democrats in Congress. We know who you are, and we intend to make sure that the voters in your districts know what you've been up to.
